Meeting on the first aid support for Damascus old city had concluded in Beirut

The UNESCO meeting for first aid support for Damascus old city (Souq Al-Asrooniya as a case study) concluded in Beirut on 15 November 2016 in the framework of the project: emergency safeguarding of the Syrian cultural heritage and follow-up to the world heritage committee decision on Damascus.
 
The two days meeting was attended by the Arab Unit of World Heritage Center in UNESCO, emergency safeguarding of the Syrian cultural heritage project, Heritage experts. From the Syrian side: DGAM_Ministry of Culture, Damascus Governorate, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Endowment, Architecture University, Engineers Syndicate / heritage committee and Saed charity.

The meeting reviewed the immediate preventive measures as well as of an emergency response plan in view of the escalation of the crisis in the area of the Old City of Damascus, according to the short note prepared jointly on 20 December 2013 by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, ICOMOS and Interpol, with the contribution of ICCROM. They also discussed the followed means by the national authorities to confront and reduce the fire of Souq Al-Asrooniya, which erupted on 23.04.2016, as well as the restoration plan of the Souq and the Ottoman Bank.
The national experts have presented the state of preservation of the old city of Damascus. The presentations provided scientific data and more accurate process to help suggest solutions to confront these threats of all kinds, especially fires, and to develop a plan for coordination between the various stakeholders.

At the end of the meeting, the attendance confirm on the need to support the joint national efforts in the field of protection and rehabilitation as well as the necessity to  prepare the management plan of the historic city. They also stressed the need to use traditional materials in the restoration work or reconstruction in order to keep the outstanding universal value of the old city of Damascus that reported when the city was listed to the UNESCO world heritage list on 1979 set out on the bases of 1972 convention that the World Heritage site gets the attention of the international community to make sure to preserve it for future generations. The old city of Damascus has been included on the UNESCO List of World Heritage in danger in June 2013.
