International media published a video footage
this evening, of a quick tour around the Arch of Triumph in the ancient city of Palmyra, showing the heavy damages caused by the explosion carried out by the terrorist militants of ISIS last Sunday
, as a first documentation to this outrageous act.
The footage and the photos published here show the actual situation of the 3-gate arch. The central and the Southern gates are heavily destroyed, while the Northern gate seems in a better condition, which has been reconstructed during the 30s of the past century.
This new destruction comes after confirmed news from the city about setting up explosives by ISIS around several historical monuments of the city, of which many have been reported demolished: Temple of Baal Shamin
, the sanctuary of the Temple of Bel
, and 6 tower tombs
This 3-entrance Arch of Triumph starts the Colonnade, topped by an arch with beautiful geometrical and plant ornaments. It was built by Septimus Sevirus between 193-211 AD. The arch represents a unique architectural and urban solution to connect the Colonnade and the yard leading to the Temple of Bel, with 2 30-degree rotated gates.
