Proceedings of the workshop
The École Normale Supérieure in Paris organized an open workshop on November 9th in Paris to commemorate the late Khaled Asaad and other Syrian archaeologists killed in protecting the heritage.

The opening speech was by Mr. Marc Mezar, director of the École, and the organizers Mrs. Marta Ginova and Mr. Stéphane Verger, director of the lab of the East-West Archaeology.  Afterwards, Prof. Maamoun Abdulkarim, Director-General of Antiquities and Museums in Syria gave a speech about the late Khaled Asaad’s life, publications, and contributions to the restoration of many historical buildings in Palmyra.  Moreover, Prof. Abdulkarim presented the measures taken by DGAM, the Ministry of Culture, to safeguard the Syria heritage, emphasizing on the role of the local societies and intellectual and religious figures in supporting DGAM in that task.  He extended his thanks to the local authorities (the Syrian armed forces, the police.. etc) for their help to transfer the endangered museum collections to safer areas.

Prof. Pierre Leriche, in turn, spoke highly about the efforts presented by DGAM, then expressed his sorrow for the big loss of the late scholar Mr. Khaled Asaad, and the other killed colleagues of DGAM, in particular Mr. Abdullah Khalif, who had worked long with the French mission in Doura Europos, East of Syria.

Dr. Houmam Saad gave a presentation about the endangered archaeological sites and their damages, then showed examples of the neighbouring countries who are stopping the smuggling Syrian antiquities, i.e. Lebanon, and those who have not stopped it, i.e. Turkey, despite the related international laws and UN resolutions.

The last presentation was by Dr. Kumait Abdullah, who showed the restoration projects held by DGAM teams in the conflicted areas.

The audience gathered scientists, university professors, scholars, directors of foreign missions previously working in Syria, members of the French Senate members, and several enthusiasts.

At the end of the workshop, Prof. Abdulkarim was invited by Mr. Jean-Pierre Vial, president of the Syro-French commission at the French Senate, who decorated the Senate medal to him on behalf of all DGAM staff members for their efforts and devotion to protect the Syrian cultural heritage, and for the memory of the late Khaled Asaad.
