UNESCO International Conference on World Heritage Sites and Museums

The UNESCO Museums programme  & the Regional Centre for World Heritage Site in Bahrain had organized the World Heritage Sites and Museums Conference on 2 and 3 November 2016 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.The aims of the conference to highlight the important link between the World Heritage Sites and related museums in enhancing the preservation of sites and artifacts and increasing their relevance to a variety of audience through education and outreach.


The conference inaugurated with both of Francesco Bandarin , UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture., also Sheikha Mai Bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, President of the Board of Directors of the Regional Centre for World Heritage Site, as well as Dr. Mounir Bouchenaki Director of the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage, the words of which focused on issues related to the role of museums in the publication the culture of reconciliation and coexistence and peace in the different communities in the world, and the work on the advancement of international cooperation in the fields that serve the protection of archaeological sites on the memory of that unite peoples.


Director-General of Antiquities and Museums, Dr. Maamoun Abdulkarim also presented a lecture about the site and the Museum of Palmyra before, during and after the control ISIS gangs, was focused on the extraordinary efforts undertaken by DGAM in the Ministry of Culture, to save the greater part of Archaeological objects before the fall of the city, and on prompt action after the liberation of the city on 27 March 2016.
He also commended the government departments that had provided support to the efforts of the DGAM in the evacuation of antiquities that were damaged and taken to Damascus, in preparation for renovations through the partnership between DGAM , UNESCO , and international partners which are specialized in this field.


Also he emphasized the importance of international cooperation in the issue of rehabilitation of Palmyra, through the documentation work carried out by specialists in DGAM, and the development of plans for the future in a scientific manner agreed upon by national and international committees under the supervision of DGAM and UNESCO for restoration rehabilitation of damaged Monuments, based on the respect for the scientific basics in this issue and he assure that DGAM will be applying these basics in Palmyra and other archaeological sites that were damaged because of the crisis, and he mentioned the most important is the return of peace and security to Syria and to its people.
