A Syrian delegation is taking part in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) General Conference- Session 38 which held on November 3-18, in Paris, France.
The delagation is headed by the Presidant of the National Comission for UNESCO, Ministy of Education Dr. Hazwan al-Waz and is attended by the Director-General of Antiquities & Museums Dr. Maamoun Abdulkarim.
Dr. Maamoun Abdulkarim met with UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, discussions focused on the state of cultural heritage in Syria, the measures taken by the DGAM for its protection in times of conflict, risk preparedness and mitigation actions undertaken to protect movable heritage from Syria’s museums and archaeological sites, as well as specific conservation issues at the Syrian World Heritage sites included on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
The Director-General of UNESCO published on Twitter her photo with Dr. Abdulkarim commented, “You are a hero to heritage preservation. UNESCO supports you and all those who work so tirelessly to protect our shared heritage. Your battle is exemplary”.
